Navigating Mental Health in Hospitality: What We’ve Learned and Where We’re Headed

This third and final installment of our Talking Hospitality mental health series of blogs rounds off an essential conversation that began with supporting employee well-being and continued with insights into creating psychologically safe workplaces.

With the pandemic behind us but its echoes still reverberating, what’s next for mental health in hospitality?

Learning from the Past

Episode 6 of the Talking Hospitality podcast tackled mental health head-on, with insights from mindset coach Susan Grandfield. Her advice on recognizing early signs of anxiety or depression—like changes in eating patterns, physical tension, or a spiraling negative mindset—is just as relevant today.

But as we’ve emerged into 2024, the context has shifted. New challenges are reshaping the mental health landscape.

Hospitality remains a fast-paced, people-driven industry, but the stigma around mental health is finally lifting. A 2023 study by Deloitte revealed that 75% of employees want more mental health support from their employers, and hospitality leaders are increasingly aware that thriving staff equates to thriving businesses.

Today’s Challenges in Mental Health

Despite progress, there’s work to be done. According to recent UK statistics, 39% of hospitality workers report burnout—down from pandemic highs but still concerning. The reasons are evolving:

  1. Economic Uncertainty: Rising costs mean tighter budgets and more pressure on teams to do more with less.
  2. Multigenerational Workplaces: As co-host Tracey Rashid noted in episode 34, today’s workforce spans four generations. This brings a rich diversity of experience but also friction, as communication styles and expectations can clash.
  3. Digital Overload: While technology has streamlined processes, it’s also contributed to a constant sense of being "on." Hospitality workers often find it hard to unplug.

Modern Approaches to Mental Health

How do we tackle these challenges? It starts with evolving our strategies. Here's what forward-thinking hospitality leaders can do today:

1. Create a Culture of Communication

Susan emphasized the power of simply checking in with colleagues. But in 2024, we can take it further:

  • Anonymous Feedback Tools: Platforms like Culture Amp let employees voice concerns safely.
  • Mental Health Check-Ins: Start team meetings with a quick emotional temperature check. Tools like Mentimeter make this easy.

2. Invest in Mental Health Training

Mental health first aid is no longer optional. The Mental Health First Aid England program offers training tailored to high-stress industries like hospitality. Leaders must also ensure support isn’t a box-ticking exercise but an embedded cultural norm.

3. Rethink Work-Life Balance

With labor shortages continuing to plague the sector, it’s tempting to push teams harder. But data from the CIPD Health and Well-being at Work Report 2023 shows that flexible scheduling leads to improved employee retention. Consider:

  • Rotating shifts to allow more downtime.
  • Partnering with platforms like Gympass to provide physical and mental wellness resources.

4. Champion Peer Support

There’s comfort in shared experience. Encourage mentorship programs where seasoned staff can support newer team members. Peer groups—whether formal or informal—build camaraderie and resilience.

5. Focus on Financial Well-being

Financial stress is one of the top contributors to mental health issues. Hospitality employers can help by:

  • Offering salary advance schemes like Wagestream.
  • Providing workshops on budgeting and financial literacy.

Where Do We Go From Here?

The Talking Hospitality podcast has explored the layers of mental health in our industry, and this third blog aims to cement one key takeaway:

mental health isn’t a side project—it’s central to running a successful, people-first business.

In Susan’s words: “Whatever you’re feeling is okay, and you’re not alone.”

This message is the foundation upon which we build supportive workplaces. It’s not just about ticking boxes; it’s about creating environments where everyone—from entry-level staff to senior managers—can thrive.
